Roxettes Motors [officially registered and operating under the laws of the federal Republic of Nigeria as “Roxettes Eco-Drives Ltd” with RC – 1907862] recently took the Nigerian internet space by storm when it announced its launch of its EV lineup in Enugu, Southeast Nigeria and invited members of the public to come for test drives of their EV lineup on the 23rd of November, 2024 at Okpara Square, Enugu, Nigeria. The company officially availed the SURGE-X EV to the public with that launch, the car which South-Easterners have nicknamed “Efi Igbo” and “Enyimba”.

The company’s explosion onto the scene came after Innoson Motors announced their EV lineup [which we covered here] – the first of its kind in Africa’s largest country. Nigerians have welcomed the company into the EV space, with Roxettes Motors exhibiting at the Aba Trade Fair, Abia State and fulfilling orders for their cars across Nigeria. The significance of this cannot be overemphasized, as it appears that Nigeria is growing its EV industry in leaps and bounds.

Roxettes Motors: When, Where, What?

Roxettes Eco-Drives Ltd with RC – 1907862 was established in the year 2022 with managing director and CEO Kelechi Orji taking the wheel of operations to lead the company’s vision. The company is a licensed vehicle manufacturing and assembling company in Nigeria, and, according to the information on its website, Roxettes Motors produces “various types of vehicles, including compact and subcompact cars, midsized sedans, large and luxury cars, and vehicles powered by CNG, hybrids, and electrical technologies”. The company’s factory [as at the time of press] is located at Eco-Drives Green Metropolis (EDGM), Free Trade Zone, Obuaku Industrial City, Abia State, Nigeria.

Roxettes Motors has assembled a lineup of EVs for the Nigerian market, and these include:

  1. The Blaze-X: a luxury car with rugged performance, laser-welded steel body and chassis, and single and double configurations. The car has options for 2WD and 4WD drivetrains, offering choices for different terrains, whether rugged or flat.
  2. Aero-u75 Plus: an SUV-style luxury car with 4WD capabilities, large touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration; wireless charging [for phones], 360-degree camera system, alongside other luxury fittings SUV lovers would be sure to enjoy.
  3. Surge-X: equipped with advanced turbocharging capabilities, 4WD drivetrain, Sport-tuned suspension, and sleek aerodynamic body design.
  4. Lumen-Vx7: a rugged pickup vehicle for off-road adventures, advanced traction control with electronic stability control; 360-degree camera system and other features that combine luxury with functionality.

The Impact of Roxettes and its Electric Vehicles on Nigeria’s Economy

EVs are new to the Nigerian automotive industry and this newness presents a strong business opportunity for businesses and corporations servicing the automotive industry. This means potentially more cross-border trade opportunities for South-east traders [given that South-Easterners arguably have Nigeria’s largest trading demographic] for supporting systems, among others. Lawyers and law firms in Nigeria can serve on-ground to advise on Trademark registrations, licensings, et cetera, for these supportive motor parts traders will surely import to service the EV industry, so this presents a win for the Country.

Opportunities presented for Roxettes Motors and its Electric Vehicles

There is limited EV infrastructure in Nigeria [charging stations, electricity infrastructure], which are very critical drivers for the adoption of EVs in Nigeria. However, for Roxettes Motors, we are sure that the opportunities are equally promising. Countries are pushing towards greener energy, and policies which favour local manufacturing, can incentivize the company to continue growing its operations in leaps and bounds. So, in all, we hope to see a long-term win for the company in its operations.
