Innoson IVM EX02 Electric Vehicle: A New Era for Electric Vehicles in Nigeria

Electric Vehicles came into the automotive scene due to a variety of factors, among which includes environmental concerns and the push to shift from petrol to electric vehicles in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions globally. It is not news that traditional combustion engines contribute quite significantly to global pollution levels, and the automotive industry has been under sustained pressure from environmentalists to reduce its carbon footprint. Furthermore, the need for energy efficiency further drives the push towards EVs. With these continuous pushes, automobile manufacturers went back to the drawing Board and came up with EVs; unfortunately Nigeria and many other countries across the Third World were left behind, as they still relied heavily on petrol while Tesla, BYD, NIO, Volkswagen Group, General Motors, among others, pushed great Electric Vehicles into the market.

Finally, Nigeria has joined the drive, with Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Co. Ltd. announcing its first Electric Vehicle, the Innoson IVM EX02 Electric Vehicle.

Innoson Motors: Pioneering Nigeria’s Auto Industry

Innoson Motors has been the trailblazer in Nigeria’s automotive sector. Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Co. Ltd. was founded by Innocent Ifediaso Chukwuma as the first and largest indigenous vehicle manufacturer in Nigeria. The company’s operations in the automobile sector at least gave Nigerians a “home-grown” alternative to the second-hand imports that litters Nigeria’s car dealerships—the company has been producing locally assembled cars, trucks, SUVs, Jeeps, and trucks tailored for both Nigeria’s local and regional markets. The company has found success with notably the Nigerian Army, which uses the car line as their [un]official vehicle of choice.

Innoson Motors has continued to lead the way, and has recently driven into the future by announcing the Innoson IVM EX02 Electric Vehicle, the very first of its kind in Nigeria. The company has done two things: first, it has expanded its portfolio into making EVs; second, it has pioneered a new change and direction in Nigeria’s automotive future…no pun intended.

Why the Innoson IVM EX02 is a Game Changer

Innoson Motors has rolled out an announcement for its EV line, setting the Nigerian internet abuzz with the news. Innoson Motors unveiled the Innoson IVM EX02 Electric Vehicle first to newsmen on the 11th of September, 2024. Cornel Osigwe, Innoson’s head of corporate communications, made posts on his personal Facebook account, with news of the product, and further, of him test-driving the car.

Fortunately, the Innoson IVM EX02 Electric Vehicle is coming to Nigeria at a time when petrol is exponentially more expensive than it’s ever being in Nigeria, with customers buying the commodity for as high as ₦1,300 [One Thousand Three Hundred Naira] in some locations across Nigeria. With Nigerians both rich and poor groaning under high petrol prices, many have welcomed the Innoson IVM EX02 Electric Vehicle as a game-changer, and there has been heightened interest in the vehicle line, more than we have seen in other car line-ups from the same company. This simply means that Nigerians are getting tired of high petrol costs, they need energy-efficient vehicles, and apparently, those who can afford it are waiting and willing to buy up the cars as the company rolls them out to the public.

330-400km Range: What It Means for Everyday Drivers

Official information rolled out by Innoson Motors gives the driving time of the Innoson IVM EX02 Electric Vehicle to last between the 330-400km range. This simply means that an everyday driver even in congested Lagos roads can be assured that they can cover quite a substantial distance before needing to recharge. In a city like Lagos where traffic jams are the order of the day, with drivers getting stuck for quite long in stop-and-go traffic jams, driving the Innoson IVM EX02 Electric Vehicle or any other car from their EV lineup will present no problems, because, unlike their petrol counterparts which guzzles and burns petrol even while idling, EVs don’t waste energy while idling, and use energy only while in motion. So, with this feature, imagine the potential energy savings for a driver getting stuck in a Lagos traffic jam. Furthermore, making stops at the petrol station to refuel is not a concern here, as the car wouldn’t need to. It is little wonder that Nigerians are so excited about Innoson’s EV lineup.

The car also has an electronic dial-type gear selector, an added modernity that’s lost on older models of even the world’s largest car manufacturers.

The [potential] Impact of Electric Vehicles on Nigeria’s Energy Landscape

Nigeria has relied on fossil fuels for the longest time. With the drive towards cleaner energy, the Innoson IVM EX02 Electric Vehicle will surely offer [drivers] a respite from continuous environmental degradation. We fear, though, that the number of consumers who can EVs in Nigeria may be too minuscule, thus tempering whatever huge impact the car lineup in expected to make in the country. Do Nigerians drive cars? The answer remains yes, but the majority of cars plying Nigerian roads are used cars imported from other countries—the cost of newer car models and off-the-factory-floor cars has always kept Nigerians off the new cars. This may shrink the market for the EX02 Electric Vehicle and further affect whatever effect stakeholders expect the car to make in the country’s Energy landscape. We will just have to wait and see. All the same, we can’t help but have high hopes, if the enthusiasm that’s greeted the EV’s announcement is any indication.

What’s Next for Innoson and the Nigerian Automotive Industry asides the IVM EX02 Electric Vehicle?

  1. Another important feature should be the mileage, very important. Sadly, many Nigerians can’t afford electric cars at the moment cos of our Tulumbu economy. I hope to see people do some reviews on the car sha.

    1. The vehicles are still new at this point and we will be needing a neutral third party to test-drive them for a while, use them and test out the features, et cetera so that we all have a comprehensive review to deal with for future reference and future users.

    1. Thank you for your comment. Recharging the car requires a (static) power station at a designated porte. I’d think that most people who can afford the car will be able to have the power ststions installed in their private homes…at least here in Nigeria. EVs aren’t mainstream here yet, so there aren’t designated power stations where one can charge their EV. It’d have to be home charging or something. The company and its PR person (Cornel Osigwe) provided no comments to my request for commentary before we published, or I’d have asked that.

      1. I think Innoson should work on their Pr too. They aren’t putting in much effort to take the brand to the desired height considering the weight the company is pulling. I can’t buy what I will spend so much to recharge. Impossicant. 😄😄😄😄
